I'm looking for a FOSS solution for a group forum for friends or neighbours or colleagues. The usual way these days is a Whatsapp group, but I don't want to depend on a commercial service like that. What options are out there? It should have both web and smartphone clients, supports text, image, etc. messages for groups and individuals. Encryption is preferred. Self hosting should be possible, but a default public server would be nice to start with. Should be quite mature and easy to use even for non technical folks.

@kupac
Signal? I only use it to phone my bro in Cyprus but it has groups and seems to work like WhatsApp.

#Signal seems to be the most simple step to protect messaging.
#deltachat seems to be a good solution to, but you need to install it on a server. Maybe you can see selfprivacy

Actually, you can also use DeltaChat as just yet another email client, w/o setting up anything. It will still look like a regular instant messaging app.

Happy to see people recommend Matrix and this

@os_sci
Mattermost seems to be focused on software development. Isn't it? I'm looking for kind of a social network or forum for non-developers.

@kupac You can run your own server. It's just a communication platform.
