So I managed to configure a new mail account with a different provider on my linux box. It only required moving from exim4 to opensmtpd, recognizing that my ISP doesn't support IPv6 on DSL, disabling IPv6 on my network interface, giving preference to IPv4 DNS lookups over IPv6 lookups and using a different port for the SMTP delivery than advertised by the new mail provider. Sigh
