I'm Bruce (he/him).

I enjoy talking to people about what they do and figure out how to model it in a way that helps them to make decisions. It feels a bit like a cross between writing speculative fiction, social history, programming, and statistics. I'm CEO of a company called Mastodon C (no relation to the fediverse). We do this mostly for Local Authority clients but have done it for all sorts of orgs.

When I'm not doing that I enjoy cycling (on my fat bike or Brompton), reading (mostly science fiction or history or science), gardening, board and card games, and other things when the world isn't quite so risky. I watch a lot of "telly" and "films". I try to take photos of whatever is to hand, but mostly share things that are already beautiful rather than find beauty in good composition or skill.

I'm a lefty green anarchist politically, but really bad at it. I support the SNP and Greens in Scotland and would like an independent Scotland with more power devolved to local authorities.

Just published the final version of my PhD thesis on my website 🙂

I did not commute, and I'm working with a solar powered laptop. If you think I'd be more productive or sustainable in an office, you're out of your mind.

Retro programmable calculator #lazyweb - my son has a TI-84 Plus (older model, not CE) which is stuck in "Test Mode". All the online solutions seem to involve using a second TI-84 Plus to unlock it. Any other ideas?

our health & safety guidance on what you can put in:

A #library is a great example of an institution where humans collaborate with each other for motives beyond profit. It is a place where it is easy for everyone to understand how our relationships with strangers can be more than mere commercial transactions.

A library is, in a way, an #anarchist space dedicated to knowledge.
It has rules and we observe them out of respect, not fear.
It has experts whose authority is not arbitrary, but knowledge based.

A library is a sanctuary from capitalism.

You really don't understand how much bullshit tech companies have conditioned us to put up with until you pick up a device from 20 or 30 years ago. The absence of all the bullshit on the old device really puts all your current ones into stark contrast.

alright everything about dracula makes sense now that i learned Bram Stoker exchanged love letters with Walt Whitman and was close friends with Oscar Wilde

Uk refugee hosting

It turns out that placing deeply traumatised people in the homes of well-meaning people with extra bedrooms, is, uh…

People with complex needs require support. Being an extended houseguest with a stranger is … bad. The way this has been handled is bad. Bad for refugees. Bad for hosts. This is not meeting anyone's needs.

How are people meant to manage this with no support?

This article is about infiltration by the UK police into the Socialist workers party.

Now consider what your chat messages contain and the fact that the EU wants to dragnet those messages. #RFC1984 #masssurveillance

"The surveillance was almost continuous between 1970 and 2007, with huge files being compiled on party members. These recorded personal details such as physical appearances, holiday plans, weddings, sexuality and childcare arrangements."

After my 5G and Asahi Linux experiments, I seem to be continuing my tinkering streak. Just installed Jitsi via DigitalOcean for @weareopencoop

It's working out at $48/month with backups for the recommended config. Any views on what's *actually* needed?(we're a four-person co-op and only occasionally run community calls)

kubuntu 22.04 can't use video on Zoom or Discord, anyone else have these issues post-upgrade? not a lot on DDG

If Virus Johnson wants to get rid of trade barriers perhaps we should join the single market and the customs union?

scotpol, #GRAReform, *last day*

Today is the last day to respond to the Scottish Government’s request for views on the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill

If you live in Scotland, please think about giving feedback on the proposed legislation, which is a welcome step in the right direction, but fairly watered down compared with the original

Who is doing/writing anything interesting around shifting to a more async/written culture to break the (Teams) meeting cycle - especially in UK (broad definition of) public service?

UK politics / future of monarchy / link to LGBT activist

I see Peter Tatchell's not pulling any punches with the royals today 😂

He has a point though. Not sure if I'll attend any Jubilee events myself, and if I do watch it on TV I'll treat it like attending a retirement party to thank someone for their long service before they leave.

Once the reign of Queen Elizabeth II is over, I think we'll see a lot of countries around the world suddenly become republics.

I also think all bets will be off once people have finished mourning the Queen's passing in my country too tbh. It's hard enough to justify a monarchy nowadays already, and with two unpopular men in line to the throne I think its days are probably numbered.
