In case you didn't notice, will give you different questions on each play-through ;) Just press "Try again" at the end. There's enough content for three completely different runs, and the fourth one will have some repetitions mixed in.

🎉 #Fediverse turns 14 today! 🎉

Here’s a fun little quiz to celebrate the occasion:

Please share your results!

It's now possible to set a post's language with a drop-down: No more mis-identified languages in posts!

(I assume this will be part of the 3.5.3 release.)

The supply ship entered orbit, the first in years. We converged at the spaceport and waited for the most important delivery. The shuttle ramp swung down, and a man in overalls wheeled out a carton of paper. Page after page of truly random numbers, writ small. Another identical carton stayed behind, parsecs away in our capital. A literal one-time pad.

Finally we could send encrypted messages to our loved ones again. We hugged the delivery man and thanked him for his gift: privacy.

Those of you who have come here from corporate social media (recently or in the past) and stayed, which of the following were behind your reasons to stay here?

Boosts OK!

Never read Dracula before? Would you like to read it.... over RSS? Dracula is entirely made up of letters, telegrams, newspaper articles. Each has a date, between May 3rd and November 10th, Last year, and now this year, Dracula Daily has offered people the ability to read the classic novel "in real time". It just started, so if you add to your newsreader, you can follow along this year. #rss

Remember the outcry for Microsoft buying GitHub and developers (allegedly) leaving en masse? It didn't happen and GitHub is as a monopoly today as it was back then. Musk/Twitter is analogous. We need to make federated alternatives better than centralized ones. Outcry won't do it.

Can't wait for the new arrivals to discover they can use their fedi account to follow video channels on @peertube instances, photo stories on @pixelfed instances, events on @mobilizon , musicians on @funkwhale , and @owncast streams.

A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week:

If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!

A fascinating fact to roll into the weekend: Far away galaxies look bigger in the sky than closer galaxies of the same size.

A short thread from Katie Mack on Birdsite explains it's because the old universe was so small, the same size galaxy took up more of the sky. 🤯

How do applications keep their client credentials secret? I mean the credentials that the service issues to me, the developer, when I register my application with them.

Are there bots to create a page with an entire mastodon thread, like the ones you find in Twitter? #lazyfedi

One more RFC that will never gain universal adoption and compatible implementations:</sarcasm>

I'm Alexander Batischev AKA Minoru.

I write programs. My biggest claim to fame is Newsboat, but I also help maintain Hakyll, gettext-rs, and a bunch of other stuff. Haskell is the reason I'm on this instance, but my "working" language is C++. FLOSS is better than proprietary.

I read books. Sci-fi is my favourite genre, but I dabble in everything. I read in English, Russian, and Ukrainian (the latter two being my native languages). E-books are good, but DRM must go.

I'm also curious about space exploration, psychology, alternative energy, and the art of writing. Probably forgetting a bunch of minor interests there, but oh well.

Happy to be here ^_^

Beware: my instance allows 2500 characters per toot, and I routinely reach that limit, especially in comments.

("Microblogging"? No, never heard of that term before. Is that like an essay but slightly shorter?)
