17.9°C at the Netherlands' main meteorological station in De Bilt today.
Highest temperature this early in the year (1901-), beating the old record by a full degree!

@Sustainable2050 And there are fewer and fewer things anyone can do to improve the situation in any way, when corporations and governments are actively making it worse...

@dmbaturin @Sustainable2050 the single biggest thing (except for not flying every week) one could have done hasn't changed the past decades: #goVegan.

The next biggest thing is spreading this #vegan message.

@janneke @Sustainable2050 The problem is that someone flying their private jet every week easily negates the effort of thousands of us who adhere to plant-based diets, so that individual choice makes no difference in the grand scheme of things.
And the world is now rapidly turning to "drill, baby, drill".

Quiet public

@dmbaturin @Sustainable2050
It is obvious that you're a meat eater looking for an excuse not to #goVegan.

One continental flight compares to a year of eating meat. Only fifty of us can neutralize the harm done by such a super rich flying bastard.

Of course, the super rich do produce a terrific share of CO2, but (many of us) going #vegan will have an immense impact.

Of course, one should go vegan for the animals anyway.

Quiet public

@janneke @Sustainable2050 It's obvious that you love to jump to conclusions and put words into people's mouth. I suggest that you should stop doing that if you want to have productive conversations.

Where did I say I was a meat-eater?

@dmbaturin @Sustainable2050

Yes, I'm assuming too much and jumping to conclusions. I'll give you that.

I suppose that's what having years of "discussions" with people who pay for animal suffering and the destruction of your planet does to you. Also, message/tone policing is usually a dead give-away. The only reason that I'm replying is that I'm *really* hoping you're going to prove me wrong here so that I might learn something.

So please shame me for my untimely conclusions and tell us what an ethical #vegan like yourself hopes to gain from posting such a defeatist message "there are fewer and fewer things anyone can do..." as you did,' when it's so bloody obvious that getting others to go vegan may well save your planet?

Public

@janneke @Sustainable2050 I used to believe it was obvious that we could save the world. I'm increasingly less certain about that.
I give up meat for ethical and environmental reasons, but the industry continues to get massive subsidies. I avoid plastic packaging, but environmental regulations are rolled back in front of our eyes. I do everything I can to avoid flying and all carbon-intensive transportation and reduce my own carbon footprint, but emissions hit record highs. I build software that can run well on low-power and older machines, but corporations are pouring enormous amounts of energy into Ponzi schemes and copyright laundering and disinformation machines.
I sill want to do those things because I believe they are right things, but it doesn't feel that it's going to make any difference to the outcome. There's little consolation in the fact that I personally didn't make things worse.
