#Element (formerly #RiotIM) is now published on F-Droid: f-droid.org/packages/im.vector

This is a new app replacing both Riot.im and RiotX, it's based on the RiotX codebase.

Mastodon -> Pleroma

Ah, I keep forgetting, if you want to give Pleroma a try, there's p.functional.cafe/ available.

Oh I forgot to post this here, but last month I bought a tritium vial pendant and it arrived. Yes, it glows for over 20 years. Yes, it is radioactive. No, it’s not harmful, as long as the glass vial is intact and the powder is not ingested (that’s why it is inside a titanium case). Yes, it looks really badass at night.

Today I learned that someone built Conway's Game Of Life using Conway's Game Of Life.

My tiny website has now a French version and an Esperanto version. 🙂

I also learned that the term “greenhouse effect” is considered improper because the higher temperature in a greenhouse is almost entirely due to its blocking of convective exchanges, and not to radiative effects. For that reason some prefer to employ the term radiative forcing. ☺️

Today I learned that the radiative power received by the Earth’s surface is almost equally distributed between direct radiations from the Sun (240 W/m²) and far infrared emitted by greenhouse gases, i.e. the greenhouse effect (about 155 W/m²).

Tortoise: ... My aunt who is a fortune teller told me that a stroke of good fortune would befall me today. So I am tingling with anticipation.

Achilles: Don’t tell me you believe in fortune telling!

Tortoise: No .... but they say it works even if you don’t believe in it.

Looking for a simple #Nix example? Here's some extensively commented code downloading a JAR file and making it available in a Nix shell:

https://git.marvid.fr/scolobb/nix-GINsim

I don't claim this to be the shortest or the cleanest way to achieve the goal, but I claim that it may help you understand Nix better 😉

Thinking about PhDs

The whole process of doing a PhD, that is, a work of research on a specific topic, in order to be admitted into academia, sometimes strikes me as rather arbitrary and convoluted. Sure, we can find valid justifications (such as the need to have a research experience), but other selection processes may work just as well. One could argue that the requirement of a PhD to start an academic career is simply a regulation mechanism, to select among who will benefit from a salary in exchange of their work. A mechanism imposed by history, not necessarily the best nor the worst possible.

Is there historical or sociological research on the origins and evolutions of this PhD thing?
