Hello Fediverse. I'm posting this tonight from my federated Flipboard profile! We're now testing our #ActivityPub integration starting with my account. You can follow me here to see all the stories I'm curating about things like startups, photography and of course, the #Fediverse. Curious to hear your thoughts on how this is working. We’ll incorporate your feedback as we make more progress on federating Flipboard. Stay tuned for lots more soon.

@mike Well, I can see it, so that means that at least some part of it is working.

Does replies work too?

Public

@loke @mike replies really are key - ActivityPub integration without it feels incomplete.

Flipboard comments on articles always felt like they were talking to no-one, having them become conversation starters on fedi would be super interesting.

To reverse a saying I've heard around the watercooler, AP minus replies = RSS.

That said, publishing a feed that can be found and followed in a fediverse app at least allows us to follow, boost, and discuss what it publishes. I've had thoughts about some convention that tells apps whether the feed publisher receives replies or not, so it can display 'reply' if so, or 'comment' if not.

I just opened a Fediverse Ideas issue about distinguishing between 'reply' and 'comment';

Codeberg.orgDistinguish between 'reply' and 'comment'Because of the micro-posting origins of the fediverse, it feels natural to click 'reply' on any post in our feed, and assume that the @mentioned person who posted it to will see our reply. But that's not necessarily true. For one thing, some people using apps that do display replies as notifications, get @mentioned so often that they're unlikely to see any given reply. But also, it's possible to implement just enough of the ActivityPub spec to create a fediverse feed that can be followed, with posts that can be favourited, boosted, and replied to. But *without* the ability to ingest replies to posts, or without an interface to display replies to the person posting into the feed. To reverse a saying I've heard around the watercooler, AP minus replies = RSS. Conversely, some fedi servers have tools that can follow an RSS feed, and display it in apps as if it was an AP feed. Publishing a feed that can be found and followed in a fediverse app at least allows us to follow, boost, and discuss what it publishes. *But*, it can set up a social expectation about getting replies to replies, which the software may not be able to do. What would be useful is some convention that tells apps whether the feed publisher receives replies or not; * Posts from a feed that can ingest and display replies to the person posting, displays a 'reply' option on posts * Posts from a feed that can *not* ingest or display replies to the person posting, displays a 'comment' option on posts Over time, people come to understand that a 'comment' is not a reply, in the sense that the person who made the post cannot and will not see it. This opens up the possibility for apps to develop a no-reply posting feature. This could be the default for people who get @mentioned so much that they're unlikely to see replies. Note: 'reply' and 'comment' may not be the right pair of words for this, other suggestions welcome.

@strypey

I think it's mostly a "problem" based on whatever implementation you're using. Something like Kbin correctly threads everything so there's not much confusion. Microblogging platforms implement it differently.

Sorry I'm lost. Can you explain how...

@wiredfire @loke @mike@flipboard.com Totally. We are still hooking up reply functionality to the Flipboard app so I am replying from my .social account in the meantime. We will have full inbox and outbox support for activitypub when we go live.
