I'm an acting craftsman at RoleModel Software in Holly Springs, NC. Fluent in many languages, including (in order of preference) Clojure[script], Javascript, Ruby, Perl, and more.
Got my Ph.D. in computer science from UNC in 2009. Spun out my research into a startup focused on data analytics and visualization that still hasn't taken off, though might yet.
I like programming, homesteading, sci-fi, and philosophy. I don't believe in AI. I do believe in Jesus, as Lord and savior.
TIL two ways to avoid clobbering my register in Spacemacs/Vim:
1. Use "_ on the change/deletion to skip affecting registers.
2. Use "2 on the paste to paste not the default content but the previous content ("3 – "9 to go older).
Also, `SPC r e` (Spacemacs) and `:reg` (Vim) list register contents.
Oh, another thing about Kubernetes: I applied a change to the config of a running cluster, waited for the requisite things to be created, and the service still wasn't up. A day or two later, I discovered that it came up on its own after I stopped watching. Looking at timestamps, looks like it took ~45 minutes from the change to start working. While I appreciate that it worked, this is difficult to manage, esp. since there doesn't seem to be a good way to be notified once things start working.
TIL that Google App Engine's flexible environment, which supports Ruby, takes ~30 minutes to deploy new code (even for the very simple app I have now), whereas the standard environment, which supports Java 7/8, Python 2.7, and Go, is allegedly quite a lot faster. In general, there seem to be a number of things in Google Cloud Platform that are a step behind AWS.
I was trying out this app, Kiwi, for Gmail. I liked it and decided to buy the full version while it was still on sale ($5 down from $10 in the Mac App Store). So I went to buy it, and it was free!
Basically it's the Gmail web interface in an app, with some extra features.
I'm feeling very fortunate & grateful today that my school, Lansing Community College, only made the local news yesterday. Very fortunate that we aren't talking about #LansingStrong today.
We were ordered to evacuate campus yesterday ~2:20pm because two people contacted police about what their "friend", another student, was planning to do after 3pm.
Police arrested the student at 3pm - with AR-15, dozens of magazines, boxes of ammo, and extra rifles.
System76 will DISABLE Intel Management Engine on all of their laptops.
System76 is an American computer reseller specializing in the sale of Linux notebooks, desktops, servers.
They are using ME cleaner with -S on all systems where possible - HAP bit will be set AND code removed. All systems will then be tested thoroughly.
Intel's ME is suspected to work as a backdoor access to all computers running it.

@tim I think it means it's circular, and the numbers indicate which exit goes where (There's 2 of each number).
And there's 1 path that completes the circle.
A lot of thoughts on this one:
Why Your Programmers Just Want to Code.
https://medium.com/maker-to-manager/why-your-programmers-just-want-to-code-36da9973388e
It's correctly aimed at management. I used to think that some of my peers just weren't passionate. That was wrong. Few programmers I meet want to be just code monkeys. But many orgs actively pursue that stereotype, and developers believe it after a while.
Ok, I configured a cron for deleating *remote* media media older than two weeks every day, to avoid another out of service due to disk space. #functionalcafe
I wrote up a brief post with some tips for managing buffers and windows in Spacemacs:

In celebration of diversity, here are some things I like that aren't generally considered cool or respect-worthy:
- Living in the country.
- Going slowly and methodically.
- Talking about Jesus (not just as a wise man, but as Lord and God).
- Owning goats.
- Questioning the latest trends in programming and technology.
- Effective Christian evangelism (yup).
- Building and using an exocortex effectively.
- Listening to country music (sometimes).
- Eating fast food.

~ HOW TO INTERACT WITH A TOOT THAT HASN'T REACHED YOUR INSTANCE YET ~
(because it's a question I see a lot from new users)
1) Right-click on the timestamp to copy the toot's URL or open it in a new tab.
2) Paste the URL of the toot into the search bar in the Mastodon web UI, then press enter.
3) The toot will appear in the search results and you can boost or reply from there.

"it’s a bit hard to give any longer term perspective yet, but it feels like we’re in control again"
@bthall There's a lesson here. ;-)
Plato and later Aristotle, "won" the debates or at least their point of view won out eventually in history, largely because Plato and Aristotle adopted that new-fangled technology of writing. The sophists relied on the oral traditions.
He who controls the documentation manages the minds of those to come. Witness in the past century how the "authority" in much of higher ed has shifted /is shifting fr prof to textbook/video.
@bthall Be careful in your understanding of what a Sophist is or was. The negative, perjorative connotation you suggest is actually the result of Plato's attack on those whom he disagreed with. It is kin to the attempt to demean "rhetoric" as meaningless fluff devoid of truth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophist or try reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for a beginning/opening of the mind.
