So, I got my domain from gandi.net and I have remote hosting from the same company (to reduce downtime)
But I want to host a (private) #Mediagoblin server as a subdomain of my website from my home PC.
I was just wondering... Can I use two different hosting services (my PC & #Gandi hosting) on the same domain name? I feel like I should be able to, I'm just not sure how to go about it... I guess I'll surf the good 'ol Web & get educated 🤔
@MutoShack I have a 150mbits up and down at home and 250 at work. I just realized: "Why are we paying hosting companies for anything?" That's sufficient for any servers I have. I'm not google.
UPS's, dynamic dns and DRBD fix 4 9's worth of problems. Maybe even 5 in a good year.
Heh, I'll definitely try hosting my own subdomain then! It'll be a good learning experience & it would be nice to have a public place to store my photos again!
@MutoShack I assume you have control of your registrar like your domain name?
I don't know how flexible it is, but you can easily swx to cloudns for free if it isn't
So just install apache or nginx on your box at home and map w/e ports in your router and then make a dynamic dns point to your house for the subdomain you made
Here is a simple and very nice photo gallery for you to install on your home box (or anywhere really): http://piwigo.org/

@MutoShack Exactly, and subdomains cost zero to make, so make as many as you like! Or even sub sub sub sub sub domains! :-) Adding dots is cheap and cheerful! :-)
@MutoShack also, i'm no special genius. If I'm not around there are heaps of other guys on here that know more than me like @jjg @vfrmedia and many others. Don't be shy asking questions. We all had to start out somewhere.
@gemlog @MutoShack I've thought about that, too -- why not host it at home? But the stuff I want to host is for a community of programmers, and it'd be more convenient to just share creds/perms to a hosting service, rather than give them full perms to something on my home network. :3
@MutoShack It's all done by dns setttings. You can have example.com point to 123.456.789 and have muto.example.com point to 124.567.890
They don't have to be on the same machine at all.
So you can easily host a public medaigoblin instance on, say, contabo or digitalocean named example.com and then just do a dynamic dns to have muto.example.com at your house.
I like to use the crazy bulgarians at cloudns.net myself.
Nota bene: even if your hosting company gives you dns, you don't have to use it.
